The Hearing Voices Group came to Greenwich Mind in April 2012. The group have settled in well and now grown to 16 members who not only have voices, but also visual disturbances. Most members have more than 1 condition and attend more than 1 activity at Greenwich Mind. The Group is led weekly by the members and facilitated by Doris and Paul, a group member for 20 years. The members have created their own guidelines for how we work together each Wednesday for an hour and a half. We try to allow each person to share about their week and then discuss a topic that has come up.
The group provides a space to share experiences, opinions and learning with others in a safe, confidential environment, along with making lifelong friends. We discuss family/relationships, the voices/disturbances, how we feel, and life in general.
We actively do workshops on a regular basis, and most recently the group created ROC heads to display artistically on the outside what goes on the inside of their minds with the voices, and that went really well. We have done workshops in the past on sleeping, relaxation, meditation, stress, medication, Reiki, hospitalisation, suicide, and personal patterns to help members to get to know themselves better. We discuss health promotion weekly for members who may be concerned too.
We like to organise 2 outings per year to the seaside and central London along with regular meetings in local cafes. We have met in the Woolwich Centre also a few times last year and hope to organise more trips out soon.
